14 preservers of important traditional arts and crafts honored as living national treasures

The Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Cultural Heritage (BOCH) held the "Annual Award Certification Ceremony for Preservers of Important Traditional Art" on Sep. 25, which recognized 14 individuals as preservers of important traditional crafts and living national treasures.

The important preservers of traditional performing arts recognized by the MOC for 2021 include Chen Ying (陳英) of Hengchun Folk Song (恆春民謠), Wang Qing-fang (王慶芳) and Peng Shiou-jing (彭繡靜) of Peikuan opera (亂彈), and Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe (杵音文化藝術團) of "Amis Malan Macacadaay (阿美族馬蘭Macacadaay)."

Important preservers of traditional crafts include Yen Yu-ying (嚴玉英) of the Kavalan weaving craft of "ni tenunan tu benina," Lavaus (陳利友妹) of "Paiwan Kinavatjesan traditional embroidery (排灣族Kinavatjesan傳統刺繡)," Ljumiyang (許春美) of Kinavatjesan traditional embroidery (排灣族Kinavatjesan傳統刺繡)," Chang Feng-ying (張鳳英) of "Gaya tminun (傳統織布)" of the Seediq people, Du Mu-he (杜牧河) of clay sculpture (泥塑), Chen San-huo (陳三火) of cut-and-paste ceramics (剪黏), Huang Li-shu (黃麗淑) of lacquer art (漆工藝), Huang Fu-shou (黃福壽) of jade sculpture (玉雕), Tsai De-tai (蔡德太) of traditional wood carving, as well as Wang Xi-kun (王錫坤) of drum craftsmanship.

Minister of Culture Lee Yung-te thanked all the judges for recognizing the 14 living national treasures this year, which represent Taiwan's immense cultural diversity. Moreover, Lee expressed gratitude to all the national treasures for their decades-long perseverance in their respective fields and contribution to Taiwan’s intangible culture.

In order for people from all walks of life to appreciate the brilliant artistic career and works of these 14 national treasures, the Yatang Hall (雅堂館) will be holding an exhibition at the Cultural Heritage Park (文化資產園區) on Nov. 15 from 9am to 5:30pm.

According to the MOC, it has registered important traditional performing arts and crafts and designated individuals as their preservers since 2009, in accordance with the "Cultural Heritage Preservation Act (文化資產保存法)."
