The 12th Golden Comic Awards ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Culture at the Taipei New Horizon was broadcast live for the first time on Oct. 28, inviting comic book enthusiasts across the country to participate in the grand event.
Seven prizes were given out this year, with a total prize money of NT$2.45 million. The grand prize of NT$500,000 was awarded to Xiaodao's (小島) work "Crouching Lion in a Bookstore" (獅子藏匿的書屋), while comic artist Ren Zheng-hua (任正華) received the Special Contribution Award.
MOC pointed out that award-winning "Crouching Lion in a Bookstore" combines entertainment and in-depth exploration of human nature in demonstrating the vision of Taiwan's new generation, and was unanimously affirmed by the jury. Other award-winning comic works of the year include "Scrunchy (他的髮圈)," "Fantastic Tales of Splendid Blossoms (綺譚花物語)," "Hell Parade 1 (地獄遊行1)," "Dutchman in Formosa vol. 2 (蘭人異聞錄II：溪之南，山之北)," "A Trip to Asylum (瘋人院之旅)," covering themes such as BL, Yuri, fantasy, history, and psychology, reflecting the free and diverse aspects of Taiwanese culture. The Best New Talent award went to the authors of "Son of Formosa" (來自清水的孩子) Yu Pei-yun (游珮芸) and Zhou Jien-xin (周見信) for reflecting the infinite potential of Taiwan's comic style.
MOC stated that the highlights of the awards ceremony will be premiered on Taiwan Television Enterprise at 10pm on Nov. 12, inviting fans from all over the country to relive this year’s Golden Comic Awards, and continue to support creators and workers. MOC will also present last year’s physical exhibition online from now until Nov. 30, including shortlisted works of the year, the Taiwanese comic book list, up to 100 international award-winning comics, cross-industry exhibits, original IP award-winning works of VTuber, and winners of the 11th Golden Comic Awards.
