The 42nd Wu San-lien (吳三連) Awards Foundation ceremony was held at the Ambassador Hotel Taipei on Nov. 15 to present awards to four winners, including poet Hsiao Hsiao (蕭蕭), novelist Yi ge-yan (伊格言), composer Chien Nan-chang (錢南章), Hsu Yung-hsu (徐永旭).

The ceremony was presided over by the poet Xiang Yang (向陽). Former director of the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Lee Jui-teng (李瑞騰), Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Chairman of the Taiwan Broadcasting System Chen Yu-xiu (陳郁秀), CEO of JuT Foundation for Arts and Architecture Aaron Lee (李彦良) respectively presented the awards to the aforementioned winners.

In his speech, Vice President Lai Ching-te pointed out that Mr. Wu San-lien ran newspapers, supported education, and valued literature and art as a very successful industrialist who contributed greatly to the development of Taiwan's democratic society and economy. Lai added that this year coincides with Wu San-lien’s 122nd birthday, and it is also the 100th anniversary since the establishment of the Taiwan Cultural Association.

Chairman of the Wu San-lien Awards Foundation Wu Shu-min (吳樹民) pointed out that since the inception of the Wu San-lien Awards in 1978, 155 cultural figures had been awarded for their contribution to Taiwan’s literature, art, and academia.

According to the Wu San-lien Awards Foundation, the first Wu San-lien Awards ceremony was held in 1978 when Wu was 80 years old. His relatives, friends, and colleagues were aware of the efforts he put into the promotion of literature and art, which prompted the establishment of the foundation. Over the last 42 years, the foundation has sought to light up Taiwan’s art and literary scene in hope of creating a society where people may express themselves freely through literature and art.
