"Taiwan's First Ba Jia Jiang Eighth Generals (台灣第一八家將)," a photographic work by Miaoli-based photographer Tzeng Chin-fa (曾進發), was honored as one of the top ten best event photographs at the 2020 Budapest International Foto Awards (BIFA)
Tzeng has won numerous international photography awards over the past few years. His recent winning submissions show images of Xu Mingzhong (許明仲), also known as the "rice dumplings master," who dressed up as Ba Jia Jiang (Eight Generals) dancer. Xu has played the role of Ba Jia Jiang for over 40 years since he was 12 years old. He is adept at playing the torturer of the eight generals, whose appearance is defined by a ghostly painted face, serious eyes, and a majestic posture. He carries various torture tools on his shoulder, including handcuffs, shackles, knives, and axes. Tzeng would draw attention to details such as shreds and smog by using a fast shutter speed so as to capture the lively festive atmosphere.
Tzeng pointed out that Taiwan's religious festivities are rich in culture and art, and it is always filled with human warmth. He expressed his enthusiasm for sharing Taiwan's unique folk culture, as these images are very impactful and resonate with people from countries all over the world.
By participating in international photography competitions, Tzeng hopes to enhance Taiwan's visibility in the international community, and at the same time bring the world's attention to the profound and unique cultural heritage of Taiwan's temple.
"Taiwan's First Ba Jia Jiang Eighth Generals" previously also won the bronze prize at PX3 France in 2020. It was later selected as one of the nine finalists for the category of CANDID (moments captured) of The Portrait Project competition hosted by the Lucie Foundation in 2021.
