Two Taiwanese opera troupes join hands to create flagship production

To mark the 2022 Taiwan Traditional Theatre Festival, the National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA) specially invited two local performing troupes, Ming Hua Yuan Tian Zi Art & Culture Group and Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group to collaborate for the first time to create a flagship production "The Unnamed Island: The Hagseed and the Wizard (無題島:孽種與魔法師)."

Co-directed by Wang Chia-ming (王嘉明) and Baboo, the play will be presented at the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center from May 6 through 8. Inspired by Shakespeare’s legendary play “The Tempest (暴風雨),” “The Unnamed Island: The Hagseed and the Wizard” serves as a prototype of the story.

It explores the coexistence of man and nature from the perspective of monsters and imagines the future of the island. Director Wang uses "The Tempest" as a framework and incorporates the plot elements of a classic Shakespearean play: betrayal, revenge, disguise, mistaken identity, magic, play within play, and more. The leading cast members include Chen Chao-hsiang (陳昭香), Chen Li-chiao (陳麗巧), Sun Shih-wen (孫詩雯), Chen Chin-hsin (陳進興), and Wu Yi-hsuan (吳奕萱).

NCFTA’s Deputy Director Chou Ya-jing (周雅菁) said that Ming Hua Yuan Tian Zi Art & Culture Group has a very strong fan base and they are well-received by the audience. Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group is an outstanding team in contemporary theater as well as a regular winner of the Taishin Arts Award. "Is it possible for 'The Unnamed Island: The Hagseed and the Wizard' to lay an important foundation for the future innovation of opera? No matter which type of opera you like, contemporary or traditional, we sincerely hope that you will come to the theater to witness this moment," Chou added.
