VR animation film by NHM wins award at international festival F@IMP

An immersive animated virtual reality film "Crazy Museum (酷獸奇航)," produced by the National Museum of History (NMH), won the Bronze Prize in the category of Augmented and Virtual Reality at the Festival of Audiovisual and Innovative Museum Media Productions (F@IMP) 2021 & 2022.

Director of NMH Liang Yung-fei (梁永斐) stated that in recent years, NMH has been integrating technology applications, cultural and creative licensing and development of original works in order to become a "smart museum." The results have been remarkable and winning this award proves that NMH's effort has gained worldwide recognition, he added.

"Crazy Museum" utilizes media technology to tell a story of how the main character Kuper (酷獸) and his companions travel back in time to search for the missing pieces on his head while building friendships and becoming a better self. NMH selected a few pieces of items that have been designated national treasures and cultural relics that span thousands of years, and made them the characters of "Crazy Museum." For example, the main character Kuper is based on a unique bronze vessel "Animal-shaped Brazier Stand (獸形器座)." Since 2018, the theme song, animation, comic, Line stickers, and animated VR film of "Crazy Museum" were released, hoping to reach broader audiences and establish a new route to market for museums through IP licensing and original stories.

The F@IMP is hosted by the International Committee for Audiovisual, New Technologies, and Social Media (AVICOM) of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). It is held in different countries annually aiming to encourage and recognize the production of audiovisual productions and innovative multimedia technologies produced by museums or heritage and cultural institutions worldwide.
