Exhibition on showcasing cultural heritage education kicks off

The Bureau of Cultural Heritage is holding an exhibition that showcases the achievements of the 1916 Workshop in cultural transmission and heritage education at Cultural Heritage Park in Taichung City until March 19.

According to the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, this year's exhibition has three major themes—"weaving," "deftness," and "colorfulness." In addition to a compilation of 68 creations by the craft trainees, craftspeople, including wicker weaver Chang Hsien-ping (張憲平), ceramic and lacquer artist Shi Jia-xiang (史嘉祥), and Taichung Sheng Wu Jhou Puppet Troupe (台中聲五洲掌中劇團) director Wang Ying-jun (王英峻) were invited to join the exhibition to display their works for the public to get more familiar with cultural heritage.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition took place on Jan. 17, which was attended by the Culture Heritage Bureau's specialist Horng Yih-shyang (洪益祥), artisan Yang Mei-ling (楊美玲), and some of the artists who have participated in the exhibition. There were also performances presented by the students from the glove puppetry course.

Established by the Cultural Heritage Park, the 1916 Workshop invites traditional craft preservers and craftsmen to offer courses on cultural heritage every year, hoping that through the combination of theory and practice, cultural heritage such as traditional crafts and performing arts will be passed on to the next generation.

Horng stated that, in recent years, the 1916 Workshop has been responsible for cultural education as well as innovative design and marketing promotion, and continues to provide related courses. It is hoped that the public will gain a deeper understanding of our cultural assets through this exhibition, he added.

Apart from the exhibition, there are also creative markets, DIY workshops, and lectures during the Spring Festival vacation. For more information, please visit the official website or Facebook of the Bureau of Cultural Heritage.
