Taiwanese new media artist Wang Lien-chen (王連晟) has been invited by GRAME, a national music creation center in France, to become a resident artist and display his installation work "Parallel City” at Les Journees GRAME 15, a biennial event organized by the Lyon-based music center.
"Parallel City” is a new, technologically interactive work combining such elements as laser lights, mirrors, and high-speed DC motors. Wang replicates the interlocking virtual and physical pipes of a modern city and presents an urban space constructed by numerous invisible transmission systems by using the refraction effects of many suspended half-mirrors. The entire setup is interlaced with sounds, leading the audience to watch the unusual state of affairs — a state of unlimited extension and expansion — that they otherwise could not have perceived with the physical eye.
Wang said he is deeply interested in the relationship between the human body and its surrounding space, hence his creations use laser lights to create and mimic such physical interactivity. The creative idea comes from the intricate piping that was concealed inside walls but became exposed when his home was recently renovated. The work also reflects the fact that people habitually accept the end result of transmitted information but do not care whether the transmission process is rough and unrefined.
The Lyon-based GRAME forged a partnership with Taipei's Digital Arts Center in 2010 to exchange residency opportunities and foster a deeper relationship in the arts between France and Taiwan. Wang follows a succession line of emerging Taiwanese artists who were chosen by GRAME to receive residency.
In cooperation with other French organizations, GRAME will also sponsor a two-day "SmartAct” seminar and workshop and invite young new media artists to brainstorm and discuss the human relationship with electronic transmission systems, including cell phones, internet, and e-mails. Lin Jin-yao (林經堯), the Taiwanese artist who served residence at GRAME in 2011, will preside over the 2015 GRAME workshop.
