A new production by Taiwanese artists dancing with a robot will be taking the stage of the famous 3LD Art & Technology Center in New York in mid-February, setting a new milestone for the Ministry of Culture's Rainbow Initiative for collaborative cultural projects.
The production "Huang Yi & Kuka” is part of the Taoyuan-based Quanta Arts Foundation's "QARing—International Digital Art Performance Collaborative Cultural Project,” which was subsidized by the Rainbow Initiative in 2013.
The production created by dancer-choreographer Huang Yi (黃翊) will feature a robot named Kuka and two additional Taiwanese dancers — Hu Chien (胡鑑) and Lin Jou-wen (林柔雯) — in the ticketed performances running Feb. 11 through 17.
The creation of the dance originated from Huang's childhood dream of having the company of a robot. After completing his dance and choreography training, Huang finally fulfilled his dream. The project cleverly combines dance and technology, smoothly bringing together an extraordinary presentation of modern dance and visual art on the seemingly robotic stage.
Named one of the "25 to Watch” in the new choreographers category by Dance Magazine in 2011, Huang has performed at the opening of the Ars Electronica Festival in Austria, the Joyce Theater in New York, and the Engien-Les-Bain Centre des Arts. Having choreographed for leading dance theaters such as Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance 2 and the New Jersey-based Nimbus Dance Works, Huang has also won various international awards, including the Taipei Digital Art Performance Award and the Cross Connection Ballet International Choreography Competition in Copenhagen.
"Huang Yi & Kuka” is also funded by the 3LD's (3 Legged Dog) residency program. Ticketing information and more can be found here.
