The University of Southern California (USC), one of the latest institutes that joined the Ministry of Culture's Spotlight Taiwan program earlier this August, will host its first-ever Taiwanese documentary screenings on Oct. 28.
The themes shared by the selected documentaries — "They Are Flying” (2008), "Hi! Baby!” (2012), and "Rock Me to the Moon” (2013) —are domestic values and family culture, ideals that are held dearly by Huang Chia-chun (黃嘉俊), the maker of the aforementioned documentary trio and a decorated director.
The 40-year-old filmmaker is known for his focus on social and familial issues, and his devotion to long-term documentation. "They Are Flying” was the culmination of a year-long effort in chronicling the lives of children from families fragmented by domestic violence, and "Hi! Baby!” navigates the lesser-known side of Taiwan's adoption scheme.
Huang's latest release, "Rock Me to the Moon,” delves into the lives of six fathers whose children are captured by rare and inconsolable illnesses. Bonded over similar domestic challenges, the fathers form a rock band called "Sleepy Dads” in reference to the routine of round-the-clock child care, and sing their way to the top of Taiwan's annual Ho-hai-yan Rock Festival.
Through the lens manned by the observant Huang, the audiences will be able to witness many precious moments from all corners of Taiwanese society, and re-experience the unbreakable bond of parental love. The filmmaker will also be in attendance and hold a Q&A session after the final screening.
Moderated by USC political science professor Stanley Rosen, the EASC (East Asian Studies Center) Taiwanese Documentary Film Series is made possible by the support of the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
