The 2014 Summer Sonic, one of the biggest music festivals in Asia, will have an unprecedented number of Taiwanese musicians performing on its stages. The lineup includes six rock bands — ChthoniC (閃靈), Mayday (五月天), Cosmospeople (宇宙人), Magic Power, Aphasia (阿飛西雅), and Loh Tsui Kweh Commune (濁水溪公社).
Several musicians from these bands attended a press conference on July 24 prior to their departure to the festival in Japan.
Chang Chung-jen (張崇仁), head of the Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, gave them surfboards tosymbolize a safe voyage and success. In addition to performing at the festival, the bands may further collaborate with record companies in Japan to expand the scope of their careers and to help Taiwan bands shine on the international stage, said the official.
Expressing her excitement to put on an international show with other local bands, Doris, leader of ChthoniC, stated: "We must let audiences from around the world see the spirit of Taiwan's rock music.” She also announced that the group's two performances in Tokyo and Osaka will feature the Chai Found Music Workshop (采風樂坊), a Taiwanese assemble of heavy metal rock and traditional Chinese music.
In addition to the concerts at Summer Sonic, ChthoniC, which has released several albums in Japan, also organized the "Taiwanderful” concert in Tokyo's Ebisu district for Aug. 15. The fringe event will promote Taiwanese pop culture by offering local snacks, displaying albums by Taiwanese musicians, and screening film introductions.
First launched over 10 years ago, Summer Sonic is Japan's best-known music festival among international audiences. This year, the festival is set to open in Tokyo and Osaka on Aug. 16 and 17, respectively, and is about to feature nearly 100 bands from Japan and abroad.
