With the assistance of the Taipei Cultural Center in Paris, five Taiwanese performance groups will participate in the 2013 OFF Festival d'Avignon in France. This year will mark the seventh year of Taiwan's participation in the famed summer festival, which will run from July 8 to 31.
The Taiwanese groups invited to perform in France are choreographer Ting-Ting Chang's (張婷婷) T.T.C.Dance, Theatre De La Sardine (沙丁龐客劇團), Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group (莎士比亞的妹妹們的劇團), Freedom Beat (自由擊) and MIX Acrobatics Theater (MIX舞動劇坊). They will join more than 1,000 foreign performing arts groups at the festival.
T.T.C.Dance will present a production titled "Body Platform: Cabinet Anthropomorphique.” The original piece uses drawers, a symbol of secret in surrealist artist Salvador Dali's works, to interpret the gender-related themes that characterize the Spaniard's paintings.
Theatre De La Sardine will explore a new form of performance by blending street theater and circus with various elements, including masks, clowns, music, mimes, stage props and gymnastics.
Shakespeare's Wild Sisters, one of Taiwan's most popular micro theater companies, is no stranger to the Festival Off d'Avignon, having made its France debut in 2009. This year they will bring "Absente: rendezvous avec Sophie Calle,” inspired by French author Sophie Calle's "Exquisite Pain,” to audiences in Avignon.
Percussion ensemble Freedom Beat, whose performances combine various electronic music genres, will be presenting its new program "Underground.”The production integrates images, electronic music, digital devices and performers who act as if they were going on an underground adventure.
MIX Acrobatics Theater, a group of diversely talented acrobats, will perform "Pursue Our Dreams,” a show combining acrobatics, dance, street culture and theatrical art.The production was well-received when staged at the Pisteurs d'étoiles in France earlier this April.
In related news, Japan will be sending 5 troupes, China will send 4 and South Korea will send 3 groups to the 2013 OFF Festival d'Avignon.
Thanks to the Ministry of Culture’s Paris office, Taiwanese performance groups have been able to participate in the world-renowned OFF Festival d’Avignon for almost a decade.
