In collaboration with Residency Unlimited, the Taipei Cultural Center in New York announced on Friday that two Taiwanese artists were selected to participate in a covetedartist-in-residency program in Brooklyn.
Taiwanese artists Hou I-ting and Tsao Liang-pin will be taking part in "Symbiosis with New York,” the theme of the 2013 Residency Unlimited Project, which will run from July till November.
Hou, a recipient of the Taipei Arts Awards who specializes in digital recording, will be analyzing street view data from Google Earth to map out New York's finances, fashion and tourism. Her project aims to record the humanities of a city while exploring the relationships between humans and their land.
Her fellow artist-in-residence, Tsao, will be partnering up with the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA) to capture the cultural diversity of New York and its language issues. Through interviews and artistic creations, he hopes to bring to light the matter of dying languages.
During their stay in the Big Apple, Hou and Tsao will receive technical and administrative assistance, which will culminate in a formal presentation of their residency work in September.
Their participation in Residency Unlimited is designed to enhance dialogue amongst Taiwanese and foreign artists, strengthen exchanges between the art scenes in Taipei and New York, and pave the way for more institutional partnerships between the two cities.
