Renovated from the former site of the ROC Air Force headquarters on Ren'ai Road in central Taipei, the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-Lab, 臺灣當代文化實驗場) is now a space for creative experimentation and welcomes proposals that reach across cultural fields and disciplines.
This year, the Ministry of Culture partnered with the Taiwan Life Aesthetics Foundation (臺灣生活美學基金會) to create the C-Lab Operations Team and set up five main laboratories at C-Lab — namely ones for contemporary art, digital culture, audiovisual arts, memory engineering, and social innovation.
Each of these labs are now holding talks and workshops, soliciting projects, and holding exhibitions, screenings, and exchanges to encourage the birth and display of various experimental projects.
C-Lab started from the concept of developing a platform for many different forms of experimentation. Unlike single-discipline art venues and organizations, C-Lab aims to accommodate a wide variety of innovative and unconventional dynamics.
The plan is for the site to undergo renovations over the course of the next six years or more, while at the same time making use of existing usable spaces to foster a variety of projects and activities that ignite public imagination.
"From Site to Lab, from Lab to Hub" ― the grand launch and pilot forum for C-Lab ― is slated for Aug. 18 at the Taipei Zhongzheng Hall.
Starting in the latter half of this year, C-Lab will play host to a number of international forums, exhibitions, and a youth art festival. Local and foreign artists, interdisciplinary creators, and the public are invited to participate, view, interact, and speak up.
The Ministry of Culture is also planning a phased transformation of Huashan 1914 Creative Park into a cultural content collective that will work together with C-Lab to help the cultural and creative industries take deeper root and blossom in the capital.
