NTMOFA’s Hsiao Tsung-huang to serve as Deputy Minister of Culture

With former Deputy Minister of Culture Yang Tzu-pao (楊子葆) taking up the position of Taiwan's representative to Ireland, his former position has now been filled by the director of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMOFA) Hsiao Tsung-huang (蕭宗煌).

Minister of Culture Cheng Li-chun commented that during Yang's tenure with the Ministry he played an active role in helping revive stalled work on the construction of the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying). Thanks to his efforts, the Taiwan Traditional Theater Center was able to open in October 2017, and Weiwuying is set to open this October.

Yang was also invaluable in helping the Ministry greatly improve the quality of its engineering work through his supervision of public infrastructure reporting. Along with the initiation of the project to transform the Taipei Railway Workshop into a national railway museum, he assisted local governments with planning their own projects for reconstructing historical sites and promoted a diverse range of cultural diplomacy efforts.

The incoming Deputy Minister Hsiao graduated from Chinese Culture University with a Bachelor's degree in fine art and from Taipei National University of the Arts with a Master's in art administration and management. He comes into his new role with substantial experience in the administration of arts and culture spaces.

In the past, Hsiao has served as director of the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts and National Taiwan Museum, director-general of the Department of Cultural Resources, and chief secretary of the Ministry of Culture. Currently, in addition to his directorship of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, he is also chair of the Chinese Association of Museums.

Minister Cheng has noted that Hsiao has significant experience with museums, art history, and international cultural exchange, and she believes that with his help, the Ministry will be able to take museum research and services to a higher level and better promote Taiwanese art history.

The directorship of the NTMOFA will be taken over temporarily by deputy director Chen Chao-jung (陳昭榮) until a new director is selected.
