8 artists selected for ‘Made in Taiwan’ showcase at Art Taipei

As part of the Ministry of Culture's ongoing efforts to help promising young artists break into the art industry, the "Made in Taiwan: Taiwan Young Artists" initiative has supported over 80 up-and-coming artists over the past 10 years. Focused on rising artists aged 35 and under, the 2018 "Made in Taiwan" program invited some 69 artists from different fields to sign up, with eight outstanding young talents making it to the final round.

Minister of Culture Cheng Li-Chun remarked that the energy of youth artists is an essential and highly creative force. "Made in Taiwan" showcases the explosive artistic energy of Taiwan, and the government is proud to have been able to provide a platform for presenting the nation's outstanding young artists to the world.

With the joint support of the Ministry of Culture and the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, "Made in Taiwan" nominees are able to meet with galleries, art museums, curators, collectors, and journalists from Taiwan and abroad through the annual Art Taipei fair. This not only presents them with more opportunities to work with gallery representatives, but also opens the doors to overseas art fairs and the chance to be part of the international art world.

Judge panel spokesperson and Museum of Contemporary Art director Yuki Pan noted that the Ministry of Culture's promotion of young artists, together with linkage to industry representatives and agents, can help them turn art into a lifelong career. The entries this year covered a wide range of media, which points to how young artists are leading the way in the development of the arts.

Chung Ching-hsin, president of the Taiwan Art Gallery Association, explained that the association began working with the "Made in Taiwan" program in 2013, and in the years since has helped a number of young artists connect with galleries while acting as an agent for on-site transactions. They have been able to create strong artist-gallery relationships and, in turn, drive stronger sales.

This year's "Made in Taiwan" exhibition will run between Oct. 26 and 29 as part of Art Taipei 2018 at Exhibition Hall 1, Taipei World Trade Center. A number of well-known international art workers will attend the art fair that focuses on the latest trends in contemporary art and harnesses the power of professional art galleries, opening up new possibilities for a new generation of Taiwan artists.
