‘Successors: Exhibition of Craftsmen-in-Residence’

"Successors: Exhibition of Craftsmen-in-Residence," an exhibition that will run from May 20, 2019 through Feb. 2, 2020 at the National Center for Traditional Arts' Yilan Park in eastern Taiwan, will showcase the artistry of five nationally certified artisans and their 11 disciples.

To demonstrate the 2018 results of the Yilan Park's annual craftsmen-in-residence project and present show-goers with the beauty of traditional craftsmanship, the exhibition will display 40 sets of marvelous works sorted into five categories — lacquerware, bamboo crafts, Buddha statues, tin crafts, and wood sculptures — from the 11 disciples who took part in the residency project and their five mentors.

The five master craftsmen are Wang Ching-shuang (王清霜), Shih Chih-hui (施至輝), Huang Tu-shan (黃塗山), Chen Wan-neng (陳萬能), and Shih Chen-yang (施鎮洋), who respectively specialize in lacquer painting, Buddha-statue making, bamboo weaving, tin crafting, and traditional woodwork.

These works convey the message of how these disciples were fighting against all odds to inherit the traditional crafts trade and how admirable the examples that the mentors have set in terms of passing down the skills that are fading with the passage of time.

The pieces curated for display will also include the lacquer painting "Beauty under the Moon," which was completed last year by the 98-year-old Wang. Visitors are also encouraged to interact with these artisans at their workshops nearby the exhibition area.

In addition to artistic displays, the exhibition will also showcase interview clips on these craftsmen, who talked about their turbulent careers, the connotations and innermost thoughts conveyed by their works, and their skillful artistries. Their stories will help visitors learn about the rich nature and vitality of Taiwan's traditional crafts.
