'Romantic Lolita'

Taiwan Comic Base exhibition highlights Lolita fashion culture

The remodeled Taiwan Comic Base has officially reopened with an expanded bookstore and coffee shop on its first floor. As the base has always aimed to gather diverse artistic elements to hatch creative energy and promote Taiwanese comics and graphic novels, the first event planned for the re-opening is titled "Romantic Lolita" to introduce the mesmerizing Lolita fashion culture. The exhibition will be on view from May 21 through June 14 in Taipei.

Originating from Japan, Lolita fashion culture is characterized by its ample usage of embroidery, lace, prints, bow-tie elements, and knee-length dresses in addition to exquisite shoes, bags, and accessories. Lolita fashion is seen as an attitude and lifestyle — as an outward representation of self-identification with a unique set of clothing styles and etiquette norms — by devotees.

In recent years, with efforts from Lolita fashion fans, various styles and personas have further developed in this field, generating a large following in Taiwan. Lolita fashion enthusiasts have begun making their own clothing and hair accessories, organizing tea parties and marketplace events, and building a culture around this fashion trend.

The Taipei exhibition will be displaying nine original Taiwan-based Lolita fashion brands: Atelier 17 (17號工作室), Little Rose Planet (小玫瑰星球), Oath of Rose (薔薇誓言), Happy Forest (快樂森林), Figlia, British Wardrobe (英倫衣櫥), Krad Lanrete, Baroque, and Esther fantasy island. Exhibition-goers will receive the chance to view their clothes, dresses, and accessories up close.

There will also be works by Taiwan's Lolita fashion artists, including Kokai (古怪), SnowEgg (雪歌草), VOFAN, Sunday Recover (星期一回收日), Tilabunny (緹拉兔), Zihling, and ZEI (致怡). Flora Salon (芙蘿拉造型攝影沙龍) will also showcase tutorial videos on a TV wall and display dress designs from its Metamorphose brand.

The exhibition will be divided into three sections: a display area for branded products, an area for artworks and illustrations, and a special take-a-selfie area. Additionally, there will be two special salon talks with Taiwanese artists to present the diverse facets of their Lolita fashion.

The first discussion, "Lolita Culture Discussion (漫談蘿莉塔)," will feature comic artist Kokai (古怪) and illustrator SnowEgg (雪歌草), who will introduce the basics of Lolita fashion and explain how this fashion phenomenon is incorporated into their works.

The second discussion, "The Metamorphosis of Lolita (蘿莉塔的魔法變身術)," will be moderated by comic artist ZEI (致怡) and cosplaying artist-illustrator Arger (楊哲). They will be sharing their experiences and views of Lolita fashion culture and the subtle differences between cosplay and Lolita couture.
