Now entering its 19th year, the Taiwan Annual exhibition began on September 12 at the Expo Dome at Taipei's Flora Expo Park. Running through to September 20, this year the exhibition features over 24 arts events, bringing together 10 arts organizations and groups from across Taiwan along with over 150 creators from home and abroad.
The classic Arts Equality and Creative Projects areas are being combined onto a single Annual Focus area, no longer limiting participants through classification by type of creation and exhibition form. Some 120 artists have submitted works for the new combined area. Additionally, this year will see the first Jury Prize offered, with eight experts from various aspects of the arts forming a jury panel. The 20-entrant shortlist will be announced at the exhibition.
The Taiwan Annual has long been committed to promoting arts equality, diversity, and international exchange, and to providing a way for the public to experience modern art outside of the usual gallery environment, showcasing the vast possibilities of Taiwan's modern art scene.
In his keynote speech, director of the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan Wu Shang-yung noted that after its inception in 2002 as the Artist Fair Taiwan, the exhibition was renamed in 2016 as the Taiwan Annual to be more in line with modern sensibilities. The 2020 Annual aims to usher in a new era through transformation, not only in terms of transforming the exhibition space and providing curation training, but also through its inaugural Jury Prize. It is hoped that all this will provide a platform for an ever-expanding array of modern art forms and continue to foster rising talent. Ultimately, it is hoped that the Annual will become a crucial forum for exchanges between art workers, art organizations, and others from outside the artistic community.
