National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) invites German photographer Thomas Ruff and curator Martin Germann to share about the curatorial ideas and connotation of the works exhibited at special exhibition "Thomas Ruff: after.images – WORKS 1989-2020 (影像之後：湯瑪斯．魯夫1989-2020攝影作品展)" on June 20.
Initially set to take place at the museum, the symposium has been shifted online due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. NTMoFA's chief curator of exhibition department Huang Shu-ping (黃舒屏) will serve as a moderator at the online event, and the invited panelists include founder of Lightbox Photo Library Tsao Liang-pin (曹良賓) and artist Wu Mong-jane (吳孟真).
Through the discussion between Ruff, Germann and Taiwan-based art practitioners, it will allow audiences to understand Ruff's vision, creative process and the charm of his conceptual photography works from multiple perspectives.
NTMoFA Director Liang Yung-fei (梁永斐) pointed out that the pandemic has changed our lives and NTMoFA, as a museum that serves the people, has to make changes to the exhibitions and events. Technology has been the key to holding successful events during the pandemic, enabling curators, artists and speakers from 3 different nations to come together for a discussion, she added.
Liang said, in the face of the pandemic, NTMoFA will prioritize the preventive measures of COVID-19, while continuing to provide services as well as maintaining international cultural exchange.
Born in Germany in 1958, Thomas Ruff is one of the most influential contemporary photographers. "Thomas Ruff: after.images – WORKS 1989-2020" is his first institutional solo exhibition in South East Asia. The exhibition is divided into five parts: "Working in Series: Tableaux chinois," "Turning Points in the History of Photography," "Astronomy," "Genre," and "Press." It features 105 pieces of work from the 15 series that the artist has created since 1979.
