Photographic works by Taiwanese artists after 1980s on display at NCPI

National Center of Photography and Images (NCPI) launched a new exhibition titled "Contemporary Image Arts after 1980s (80後的當代影像藝術)." The exhibition contemplates the dialectical relationship between contemporary visual art and cultural landscapes with "Specularity (鏡像)" and "Reflexivity (映像)" being the two major themes in this exhibition.

Taking "landscape" as the core proposition, both themes focus on the photographic works created by Taiwanese artists after the 1980s and explore the relationship between photography, visual art, and Taiwan's cultural landscape. The "Specularity" section in this exhibition highlights how Taiwanese image artists capture various natural-scape and cultural imagery of the external world through the lens; while "Reflexivity" reinterprets the visual narratives created by the artists and looks into different kinds of "landscapes" – natural-scape, cultural-scape, socio-scape, and body-scape.

Curator Chiu chih-yung (邱誌勇) puts together a total of 176 photographic works by 23 artists of different generations, including Ko Si-chi (柯錫杰), Chang Chao-tang (張照堂), Quo Ying-sheng (郭英聲), Chang Kuang-ho (章光和), Chiu Kuo-chun (邱國峻). These works cover a wide range of genres such as mental image photography, documentary photography, video installations, and others, to present the abundant creative energy of Taiwan’s contemporary visual art. The participating artists expressed concerns for the land and record people's lives through documentary image creations, or their subjective desires through stylistic practices, presenting different narrative themes and creativity.

The exhibition "Specularity: Contemporary Image Arts after 1980s" is on display from Apr. 20 through Aug. 21 at NCPI's Galleries 201-203; and "Reflexivity: Contemporary Image Arts after 1980s" is on display from May 19 through Sep. 11 at NCPI’s Galleries 301-303 and 305.
