'Uncovering the History of Anping Pots'

The Tainan-based National Museum of Taiwan History will host a special exhibition to showcase its collaborative project on Anping pots with the National Tainan First Senior High School from May 24 through June 22.

The "Anping pot (安平壺)” is a ceramic vessel that is believed to have been introduced to Taiwan by Koxinga during the Ming dynasty. In the past, these pots were fairly common and used for various purposes such as food storage and decoration.

Tainan's Anping District had excavated the most number of such pots in Taiwan, and the gallery of the National Tainan First Senior High School has a collection of 160.

The exhibition will present student activities from the school course on Anping pots. History of the cultural relic will also be showcased alongside with a couple of Anping pots from the school's gallery.

To aid visitors in experiencing the process of uncovering the history of Anping pots, teachers and students have made a film featuring interviews and oral history, and created animated videos, interactive devices, and art installations for the exhibition.

A DIY section for making paper Anping pots will also be set up to help museumgoers to make their own pots.

During the exhibition, the school will also invite students from neighboring elementary schools to visit the museum and learn more about Anping pots by watching short plays and participating in game challenges.

Since 2014, the museum has organized an elective course titled "Exploring and Visiting Museums” at the National Tainan First Senior High School, in which museum professionals cooperate with teachers in areas such as the arts, humanities, history, and the Chinese language to boost the problem-solving and critical-thinking capabilities of students.

This collaboration between the museum and the school has helped students to gain a deeper understanding on the origin and historical significance of Anping pots. The course also broadened perspectives by conducting field studies, digital archiving, and making ceramic pots.
