'Memahami Indonesia, Melindungi Taiwan'

"Memahami Indonesia, Melindungi Taiwan,” a Taiwan-Indonesia exhibition on intangible cultural heritages, will be held at the Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park from Jan. 20 through April 9.

In response to the New Southbound Policy, the Bureau of Cultural Heritage has invited Indonesia to co-host the exhibition to showcase seven of Indonesia's intangible cultural heritages that are listed by UNESCO along with twelve potential intangible cultural heritages of Taiwan.

The exhibition will introduce Indonesian intangible cultural heritages through seven sections, presenting each intangible cultural asset under different themes such as materials and context.

According to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the seven intangible cultural heritages of Indonesia listed by UNESCO under three categories are:

1. Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity:

  • Wayang Kulit (Shadow puppet)
  • Indonesian Keris (an weapon and spiritual object possessing power)
  • Indonesian Batik (technique of wax-resist dyeing)
  • Indonesian Angklung (a traditional music instrument made of bamboo)
  • Three types of traditional dance in Bali

2. List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding:

  • Saman dance
  • Noken multifunctional knotted or woven bag

3. Register of Best Safeguarding Practices:

  • The basic education and training of wax-resist dyeing

Visitors will be given the chance to dress in "sarung,” a garment dyed with patterns, to experience the traditional Indonesian attire upon visiting. In addition to the displayed items, the exhibition will also offer workshops for visitors to experience Indonesian wax-resist dyeing, bamboo instrument playing, Balinese dance, Indonesian shadow puppet, and Gamelan music.

Additional performances including Indonesian shadow puppet shows and traditional Balinese dances will be jointly presented by the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta during the Chinese New Year holiday.

From February through April, traditional Taiwanese workshops will be opened on weekends as well. Professional individuals and groups will instruct participants to make Chinese paper lanterns and aboriginal weaving, as well as showcase Taiwan's cultural heritage through glove puppets, Taiwanese shadow puppets, paper-pasting, and Taiwanese opera.
