The 2016 East Coast Living Art Festival will return to eastern Taiwan on Oct. 8 and unveil a month-long series of events at the Hualien Cultural Creative Industrial Park and the National Taitung Living Art Center.
To celebrate the heritage of the eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung, the 45-day-long festival will include art exhibitions, performances, and creative markets that convey local art and culture.
The Ministry of Culture invited eight artists, including garment designer Yuan Chen Feng-rong (袁陳鳳榮), ceramist Sha Gui-hua (沙桂花), craftspeople Lin Huang-jiao (林黃嬌) and Kao Mei-zhen (高梅禎), and batik artist Lin Shu-fen (林淑芬), to attend a Sept. 29 press conference announcing the festival's lineup.
Wood-carving artists Syban Misrako (張馬群) and Siki Sufin (希巨蘇飛) also demonstrated their respective wood-carving skills with a small hand-held axe and a chainsaw at the press conference.
This year, over 30 local artists and craftspeople will join the festival. Artwork including dyed and woven crafts, flower arrangements, glazed ceramics, photography, sculptures, and paintings will be showcased to present the creativity of Hualien and Taitung.
Some highlights will include the collaboration between kite maker Buteo Huang (黃景楨) and batik artist Lin Shu-fen. Visual artist Etan Pavavaljung (伊誕‧巴瓦瓦隆) and Pahawlan Cilan (巴豪嵐．吉嵐) will also create a large artwork together.
Local performance groups, including Chu-Yin Culture and Arts Troupe (杵音文化藝術團), Sky Dance Troupe (天空舞集), Small Group Taiwanese Opera Troupe (小團體話劇社), and Betel Nuts Brothers (檳榔兄弟樂團), will also present the vitality of Hualien and Taitung through dance and song.
