Featuring traditional performing arts in contemporary context, the Asia Pacific Traditional Art Festival will return to Yilan County in 2015 for its 15th edition from Oct. 10 through Nov. 1.
Organized by the National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA), the festival has attracted more than 700,000 visitors from 27 countries since 2000. It offers a platform for Asia Pacific nations to share music, art, performance, and research. This year, it will present traditional performing arts spanning folk performances, Asian puppetry, and Taiwanese opera.
The folk performances will include Taiwanese Gezai opera (歌仔戲), Hakka tea-picking opera (採茶戲), Chariot and Drum opera (車鼓戲), and Yao opera from Zhejiang Province (浙江姚劇).
Puppet troupes based in Taiwan as well as those from China, Indonesia, Japan, and France will bring hand-puppet plays and shadow theater. Chinese opera and Zhejiang-toned opera (浙江調腔) will also be staged to present the essence of traditional Chinese theater forms.
The 9th Zhejiang Cultural Fair based in Taiwan will join the festival from Oct. 23 to Nov. 6. The cultural fair will display the costumes and artifacts of Zhejiang traditional arts, and showcase about 30 photographs of beautiful Chinese traditional theater buildings and classic performances.
Additional forums, creative markets, and concerts will also be held during the 3-week long affair. For more information, please visit the event website at: http://www.ncfta.gov.tw/asia_pacific2015/.
