The Taichung Cultural and Creative Park will provide a series of performances ranging from folk parades, Taiwanese opera, and hand puppet shows to dance performances during the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays from Feb. 19 through 23.
The following is the program's line-up of performing groups:
East Art Group
Led by director Chu Jui-hsiang, the East Art Group's performance is based on Taiwanese traditional folk acrobatics. Fusing modern Western theater and dance, the group has developed a style of both "grassroots Taiwan” and "Oriental spirit.” The group's main acts include a creative drumming parade, traditional lion dance, and martial arts as well as "dance art” that combines Eastern traditions and ballet.
Established in 1995 by Hsu Chen-jung, a religious ritual performance leader, the Changhua County-based troupe has taken folk art to a new level of theater performance. Its recent drumming and ritual procession programs have been featured in major local events, including the National Day celebration parade, and overseas tours to the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, and Africa.
The SunHope Taiwanese Opera Troupe
The SunHope Taiwanese Opera Troupe has showcased its traditional Taiwanese dramas in Los Angeles, San Diego, Hawaii, and Paris. In addition to Taiwanese opera, the troupe also stages musicals in the Southern Min dialect, adding innovation to a timeless art.
Renwu Dance Theater
Championing the concept of originality, the Renwu Dance Theater has developed new programs every year since it was established 15 years ago. Its choreography consists of using free-style body language to create a rich and uniquely beautiful picture.
Taiwan League Traditional Puppetry Theatre
The Chiayi-based traditional puppet theater was founded by Huang Meng-chieh, a young man from a family of puppet artists, in 1996. The self-made theater is also self-sufficient, producing its own music, puppets, backdrops, costumes, and props.
