Created around the theme of 'Chinese Characters and Designs,' the annual Chinese Character Festival will run between Aug. 31 and Sept. 27 at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei.

Now in its ninth year, the festival is aimed at promoting the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy. The event is jointly organized by the Taipei City government and the Taipei-based General Association of Chinese Culture.

In a bid to be named the 2016 World Design Capital, Taipei is also looking to Chinese characters as an important source of inspiration, and is using them in the design of its application form, the organizers said.

This year, the festival will include five major pavilions to introduce and promote Chinese characters: a pavilion of Hanzi ("Chinese characters”) design, a pavilion of the five senses, a pavilion of Chinese characters in everyday life, a pavilion of Chinese characters for family-oriented activities, and pavilion featuring creative fun with Chinese characters.

A concert featuring singer Evan Yo, the four-member girl group Toffee and the Taiwanese band Cosmos People will be held on Aug. 31 as the opening show of the 28-day event.
