The winners of the 2013 Taiwan Jade Jewelry Design Competition organized by the National Hsinchu Living Art Center were announced on Aug. 23. The winning works are on display at the National Concert Hall in Taipei until Aug. 29. Admission to the exhibition is free.

The competition was divided into two categories - jewelry design and jade carving, with each having 58 and 52 entries. The judge panel is consisted of renowned designers, jade carving artists, collectors and scholars. Three winners and five merit award winners were selected by the panel after two rounds of reviews.

The top winner of the jewelry design category was Tsai Wan-jung. Her jade set contains a necklace, earrings, a brooch and rings, all of which can either be assembled or worn separately. The concept of her design was to use the legendary phoenix to symbolize harmony and wealth.

The top winner of the jade carving category was Ho Tang-li, whose work features the diverse geological landscape in Yehliu on Taiwan's northeast coast, from honeycombed rocks and candle-shaped rocks to the best-known mushroom rock dubbed "The Queen's Head.” Ho also decorated the main carving with two golden sculptures of Wanli crabs native to the Yehliu area. His works were described as having a modern vibe different from most traditional jade carvings.

Chen Kuo-jen, chairman of Fu Jen Catholic University's Department of Applied Arts, will deliver a speech on jewelry design and aesthetics on Aug. 25 at the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
