‘O Misterio’ featuring Teresa Salgueiro

Place:National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

Teresa Salgueiro, the former lead singer of Portuguese musical ensemble Madredeus, will stage a concert at the National Concert Hall in Taipei on the evening of Aug. 11.

The Portuguese singer will share the traditional "fado” folk music of her country with Taiwan in a one-night-only performance titled "O Misterio,” meaning mysterious in her native tongue.

The 44-year-old diva, who starred in the 1994 film 'Lisbon Story' by acclaimed German director Wim Wenders, will sing selections from the movie soundtrack, Portuguese fado songs, and other folk music at her concert on Sunday, said Le Pont des Arts Agence Artistique, the organizer of the event.

Salgueiro, who is visiting Taiwan for the first time, said at a press briefing in Taipei that she hopes her performance will help to give Taiwanese people a better understanding of her hometown, Lisbon.

Fado is a music genre that can be traced back to the early 1800s in Portugal. Characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, Portuguese folk music is often about the sea or the life of the poor, and is characteristically infused with sentiments of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia.
