An international seminar that will discuss image management and museum empowerment is scheduled to take place on May 10, the Ministry of Culture said on Friday.

Titled "Punctum: Museum Management and the Empowerment of Image Collection,” the seminar is jointly organized by the National Taiwan Museum and the National Taiwan University of Arts, and will be held at the National Taiwan Museum's Land Bank Exhibition Hall in Taipei.

Yasufumi Nakamori, associate curator of photography at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts, and Kazuko Sekiji, head of marketing and general affairs department at the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, will attend the seminar to share their experiences and discuss the outlook of image management.

The preservation of photographic works is highly valued by European and American museums, said Chen Ji-min, curator of the National Taiwan Museum.

Taiwan, however, does not even have a specialized photography gallery or museum to preserve the nation's precious images, including black-and-white photos that are virtually irreplaceable, he pointed out.

Taiwan's high temperatures and humidity have also made it even more difficult to preserve photos, Chen noted, adding that to establish a photography museum will be a major topic at the seminar.
