  • Did You Know That…?
  • Jolin keeps a beloved pooch named Whoohoo. The white toy-like dog of the Bichon Frise pedigree was featured as "Andy Whoohoo,” a canine version of the celebrated artist Andy Warhol, as part of Jolin's album promotion campaign in 2012.

Once a shy and studious schoolgirl with a penchant for the English language, Jolin Tsai is now one of Asia's biggest superstars. She also has a history of dislocating her spine, damaging her right shoulder bone, and falling headfirst to the ground from a one-meter-tall pole. According to the petite singer, however, physical injury from strenuous dance routines is a price she is willing to put up with if the audience receives a good show.

She scored her first record label deal in 1999, after winning a MTV-sponsored singing contest at the age of 18. Although her vocals were well-received, her image as the girl next door started to lack luster after the first few years, and the then-21-year-old began to realize the importance of innovation. She began to mix up her musical style by experimenting with rock ballads ("Rewind (倒帶)”) and dance pop ("Barbaric Game (野蠻遊戲)”) and changing her look for each album release.

More significantly, she began to train in various schools of dance, a performance specialty the singer knew that could set her apart from contemporary female entertainers. From classic ballet to pole dancing, Jolin has since won the heart of Asia with her relentless drive to surprise her fans at every new opportunity.

Now celebrated as Taiwan's foremost female singer-dancer, Jolin shows no sign of losing steam. She was the highest earning Taiwanese celebrity for both 2011 and 2012, having landed a total of 21 endorsement projects, and starred alongside American hip-hop artist Usher in the clothing advertising campaign "Let's GAP Together.” More important to her fans, however, is the fact that her diva status was achieved through hard work.
