Featuring aboriginal children from the tribes living around Jade Mountain in Nantou County, Vox Nativa Children's Choir is a troupe that has brought the pure, beautiful, and harmonious aboriginal sounds of Taiwan to the world stage. It has released three albums, with the second album "Sing It! (唱歌吧！)” winning the Jury Award at the 20th Golden Melody Awards.
Vox Nativa Association, an organization founded by a group of retired school principals to promote arts and humanities education in rural communities, established Vox Nativa Music School and Vox Nativa Children's Choir to foster confidence in aboriginal children and preserve the traditional singing techniques and culture of the Bunun tribe.
Based in the largest Bunun community of Luluna, the music school recruits about 50 to 80 students from eleven local schools every year to cultivate students' interest in reading and acquiring wider knowledge while learning music on weekends.
With Principal Bukut Tasvaluan(馬彼得) of Luona Elementary School serving as conductor, Vox Nativa Children's Choir has gradually developed and expanded from eleven members to nearly 100 today. Now recognized as a professional choir, it has performed four times at Taipei's National Concert Hall in the past decade.
In 2010, Tasvaluan launched the Yushan Starry Sky Music Concert, which featured extensive performances by the young singers of Vox Nativa. The first concert attracted roughly 300 audiences, heartening the children's choir and increasing its visibility in Taiwan.
In 2013, Vox Nativa was invited by filmmaker Chi Po-lin (齊柏林) to perform in his documentary "Beyond Beauty - Taiwan From Above (看見台灣),” a film presenting mountains, oceans, lakes, rivers, forests, farms, and cities from an aerial view to showcase the island's beauty as well as the impact of industrial development on Taiwan.
The last scene of the film shows the choir members climbing up Jade Mountain and singing "Let's Clap Together (拍手歌)” at the peak to cheer for Taiwan. The magnificent natural landscape with heartfelt voices of the Bunun children has touched numerous audiences, and the choir is credited with helping the film win the 20th Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary.
Since then, the choir has been invited to perform overseas, including Japan, Austria, Germany, Poland, and the United States, realizing its slogan of "let the world hear the sound of Yushan singing” and promoting Bunun culture through music.
