Taipei Railway Workshop

Situated between the Civic Boulevard and Keelung Road, Taipei Railway Workshop (台北機廠) was established in 1935 as a base to fix, repair and maintain railway vehicles. The designated national historic site covers approximately 16.8 hectares and is the largest depot, which has witnessed the development of Taiwan’s railway maintenance technology, holdings intangible cultural assets such as machine operation, railway castings and vehicle maintenance skills.


The workshop is divided into several sections, with at least 12 factories and buildings, each with its own specific function:


Engine Room (柴電工場) :

The engine room is the heart of Taipei Railway Workshop. It was constructed in 1962 in line with the railway dieselization policy. To reduce energy consumption and to increase natural lighting in the engine room, the Engine Room was designed to have large glass window panels installed.

General office (總辦公室)

The general office was the administrative center of the Taipei Railway Workshop. It is also the main entrance of the site.

Bathhouse (員工澡堂)

It is the most representative welfare facility provided to workers in the workshop. It was a place where workers could take a bath to wash away the day’s fatigue.
