Did You Know That … ?

  • Yu Kwang-chung was born on the ninth of the ninth lunar month, the date of the traditional Double Ninth Festival (重陽節). The festival is associated with the medicinal plant dogwood, hence Yu refers to himself as "Son of Dogwood.”

  • Describing himself as "one-third scholar and two-thirds writer,” Yu sides with the Goethe school of thought, in which literary inspiration is rooted in one's personal experiences in life.

  • His literary output is closely associated with his choice of residence, and his works can be categorized into three time periods - Taipei, Hong Kong, and Kaohsiung, with the imagery of the sea and table lamps repeated intermittently in the Kaohsiung works.
