NTCRI presents 'Between Fantasy and Reality – Lacquer Art Exhibition of Liang Zhi-wei'

"Between Fantasy and Reality (虛實之間)," a lacquer art exhibition showcasing the unique artworks of lacquer artisan Liang Zhi-wei (梁晊瑋), will be held at National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute Taipei Branch from Mar. 6 through May. 9.

The exhibition is divided into two different themes, namely, "Mountain (山形)" which features Liang's collection of bodiless lacquerware, and "Universe (宇宙)" presents a series of his lacquer paintings. The artworks showcased under the theme "Mountain" were inspired by the natural landscape of mountains and rivers in Taiwan. Liang used the technique of bodiless lacquerware to shape the lines and rich colors of landscape scenery at different times of the day. Liang hopes to give viewers a glimpse into the inner universe of his heart through the "Universe" lacquer art series, allowing viewers to navigate through the unknown with a free imagination.

Born in Nantou County, Liang developed interest in art since young. He chanced upon lacquer incidentally years ago, when he wanted to apply it as a protective topcoat to his bamboo birdcage. He was mesmerized by the smell and the lustrous finish of lacquer, which inspired him to start his journey on lacquer art creation.
