Australia to hold first exhibition on indigenous art from Taiwan in 2021

The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), one of the premier art institutions in Australia, is now organizing its first special exhibition on contemporary indigenous art from Taiwan, as part of its international contemporary art event that will run from 2021 to 2022.

QAGOMA and the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Sydney have recently signed a cooperation agreement. According to the pact, the two sides will begin with a preliminary study for an exhibition project on Taiwanese indigenous contemporary art, which will feature in the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art – the gallery's flagship exhibition series that has drawn 3.7 million visitors since it was first staged in 1993.

According to QAGOMA director Chris Saines, the exhibition will be the first special exhibition in Australia to shed light on Taiwanese indigenous contemporary art. Aiming to offer a glimpse of the discourse of the art, the high-profile event is expected to feature artworks by eight indigenous artists from Taiwan, he noted.

The exhibition will be a joint project between the QAGOMA, TECO in Sydney, Taiwan's Council of Indigenous Peoples, Taiwanese veteran curator Manray Hsu (徐文瑞), Paiwan Artist Etan Pavavalung, and the curatorial team from Australia.

Located in Brisbane, QAGOMA strives to present contemporary art from Australia, Asia and the Pacific. Since 1993, the gallery has launched the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT), enabling QAGOMA to foster the development of one of the world's most significant collections of contemporary Asian and Pacific art.

Every three years, the APT presents its unique mix of the most exciting and important contemporary art from the region and offers cross-cultural insight. To be joined by more than 70 artists or art groups, the 10th edition of APT will kick off in December, 2021 and run through April, 2022.
