National Taiwan Museum to hold activities for the Lunar New Year

The National Taiwan Museum (NTM) in Taipei will be holding a series of events in anticipation of the Lunar New Year from Jan. 31 to Feb. 21.

Adopting "A Better Future" as the main theme, and in collaboration with exhibitions "The Secrets Behind Whale Skeleton (鯨驗值)," "Special Exhibition of Butterfly and Blessing: Resonance between Art and Science (蝴蝶與福蝶)" and the permanent exhibition "Discovering Taiwan: Re-visiting the Age of Natural History and Naturalists of Taiwan (發現臺灣)," the NTM will host screen-printing, letterpress-printing, games, paper cutting and origami activities to convey the message of biodiversity and environmental conservation as well as to display the NTM's century-long preservation efforts. It will also highlight the multiple exhibition contents and the many diverse topics the NTM organized for 2021.

The screen-printing activity, with the "dugong (儒艮)," also known as the "sea cow," as its animal of focus this year, will take place at the Nanmen Branch of the NTM on Jan. 31 from 1:30pm to 4:30pm to celebrate the "Year of the Ox" on the Chinese zodiac.

The letterpress printing activities will take place at the main building of the NTM on Feb. 6, from 10:00am to 4:30pm, with a focus on the objects in the "The Secrets Behind Whale Skeleton" exhibition and the "Special Exhibition of Butterfly and Blessing: Resonance between Art and Science," inviting participants to create patterns for themselves that represent good fortune.

Games will be held on Feb. 13 from 10:30am to 12:00pm and on Feb. 14 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm at the main building of the NTM. Those who complete the challenges will also receive small gifts from the NTM.

The NTM will also hold a cow-themed origami activity in light of the Year of the Ox on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm at the main building of the NTM.

Finally, a paper-cutting activity revolving around a symbol of fortune — the butterfly — will take place at the main building of the NTM on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm, under the guidance of the instructor.
