Tsai Ming-liang 30th Anniversary Tribute in Tokyo

For the first time, with support from the Taiwan Cultural Center in Tokyo under the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Japan, the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is collaborating with Tokyo FILMeX to organize the "Tsai Ming-liang 30th Anniversary Tribute (蔡明亮導演創作30年紀念特集)" program to honor the Taiwan-based Malaysian filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮).

Director Tsai Ming-liang (蔡明亮), actors Lee Kang-sheng (李康生) and Anong Houngheuangsy as well as producer Wang Yun-lin (王雲霖) attended the press conference on Oct. 27, which is hosted by the senior programmer of the Asian Future section of TIFF Ishizaka Kenji (石坂健治). Taiwan's Representative to Japan Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), programming director of TIFF Ichiyama Shozo (市山尚三), and director of programming at Tokyo FILMeX Kamiya Naoki (神谷直希) also joined the event.

The Taiwan Cultural Center pointed out that Tsai's directorial debut "Rebels of the Neon God (青少年哪吒)" won the Young Cinema Competition Bronze Award at TIFF 30 years ago and went on to be recognized at international film festivals, so organizing the special tribute in Tokyo is very meaningful. Furthermore, many of Tsai’s films have been selected to screen at TIFF which is an important driving force behind Tsai’s popularity in Japan. TCC in Japan hopes to promote Taiwanese films to the international audience by collaborating with two major film festivals in Tokyo to organize this program.

In addition to the physical screenings and talks, a poster exhibition of Tsai's representative works will be held simultaneously at the Taiwan Cultural Center from Oct. 24 until the end of January next year.
