Reading the island of Taiwan at BookFest Malaysia

The Taiwan Pavilion will return to this year's edition of BookFest Malaysia running in Kuala Lumpur from June 24 through July 2.

Under the banner "Awaken Your Curiosity: Free Your Imagination” designed by illustrator Chen Ying-fang (陳盈帆), the theme features a whale that represents the island of Taiwan carrying talented authors, musicians, and artists to embark on a journey together.

This year, the Taiwan Pavilion will serve as a platform to showcase more than 15,000 literary works from Taiwan, such as award-winning books, bestsellers, children's books, and translated literature.

The showcase will also expand its coverage to appeal to new audiences who speak English and Malay to market Taiwan's diverse literature and culture globally.

As Malaysia is a major market for Taiwan's original literary works in recent years as well as a region with whom Taiwan aims to develop deeper relations through the New Southbound Policy, additional events will be held this year to strengthen regional exchanges.

The Taiwan Pavilion will hold sessions on independent bookstores and publishers, Taiwan literature-themed concerts, and film screenings to promote Taiwan literary works and enhance exchanges in publications.

In addition, notable Taiwanese authors including Su Wei-zhen (蘇偉貞), Guo Nai-wen (郭乃文), Kao Yi-feng (高翊峰), Zhou Jian-xin (周見信), Yu Wo (御我), Badai (巴代), and Wolf (臥斧) will fly to Kuala Lumpur to meet with local audiences and publishers.

The opening event on July 24 will feature a performance by the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra to mark a gift-exchange ceremony between Representative Chang Chi-ping (章計平) of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia and members of the University of Malaya and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia noted that Taiwan and Malaysia have maintained good partnerships in trading, investment, tourism, education, and culture, and culture is one of the main initiatives of the government's New Southbound Policy.
