Taiwanese movies to be screened in cafes, art galleries in Malaysia

The 2016 "Fun Taiwan Cinema” series, which will screen ten Taiwanese films during the latter half of the year, will run through Dec. 12.

Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, the film screenings will take place in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Each screening will also be accompanied by a special guest who will lead a discussion on the featured movie.

Director Tien Yu-an (田又安) of the Cultural Division noted that unlike traditional indoor movie screenings, the Fun Taiwan Cinema series will take place in venues spanning from art galleries and cafés to temples and parks across the two cities.

A total of five forums featuring Taiwanese film professional Wen Tien-hsiang (聞天祥), cinematographer Lee Ping-bing (李賓屏), producer Peggy Chiao (焦雄屏), editor Liao Ching-song (廖慶松), and film critic Ryan Cheng (鄭秉泓) will also be held alongside the film festival, added Tien.

The cinema series is made possible with the support of the Chinese Film Association of Malaysia, Malaysia Han Culture Center, and Penang City Eye press. The transnational collaboration highlights the close ties between Taiwan and Malaysia.

Selected from the Taiwan Cinema Toolkit platform established by the Ministry of Culture, the ten films and documentaries are:
