Taiwanese craft arts to join Shanghai expo

A selection of craft arts from Taiwan will be displayed in Shanghai for the 2015 Ethnic, Folk Customs, and Folk Cultures Exposition from Oct. 1 through Oct. 7.

The annual exposition showcases folk arts from all over East Asia. This year, an exhibition section featuring Taiwan's craft arts will be established to promote cross-strait economic, trade, and cultural exchange.

Taiwanese crafts have expanded their market presence in mainland China by joining expositions in recent years. Led by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), 8 craft businesses will be presenting their artworks featuring Taiwan-made designs this time.

Encompassing accessories, tableware, ceramics, and innovative stationary, the selected crafts will highlight the traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design of Taiwan.

The NTCRI's own design brand, Yii, will also join the exposition. The collection includes the "43” bamboo cantilever chair designed by world-renowned designer Konstantin Grcic and Taiwanese bamboo artist Chen Kao-min (陳高明).

Additional tea ceremonies will also be performed as part of the exhibition. Lu Min-hua (盧敏華) from the Association of Taiwan Tea will be presenting the art of drinking tea with traditional tea sets.

The organizers hope to promote the traditional crafts of Taiwan and create more collaboration and business opportunities.
