Taiwan’s lineup for Avignon OFF 2020 moved to 2021

With Festival OFF Avignon 2020 canceled, Ministry of Culture chooses same artists to participate in 2021

Originally scheduled to be held from July 3 to 26, the 2020 Festival OFF Avignon has been officially canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Taiwanese artists selected to perform this year have had their performances postponed to the 2021 festival, with any performers unable to participate to be replaced by reserves.

After deliberation by experts and professionals in late 2019, four outstanding groups were chosen to take part in the 14th iteration of the festival this year with the help of the Ministry of Culture — La Cie MaxMind, Hung Dance, Hsing Legend Youth Theatre, and Resident Island Dance Theatre.

La Cie MaxMind

La Cie MaxMind theater troupe produces works that combine elements of traditional and contemporary performing arts to reflect the various cultural influences that shape Taiwanese art and humanistic thinking.

Hung Dance

Hung Dance is a contemporary dance troupe founded in 2017 by up-and-coming choreographer and dancer Lai Hung-chung. In Mandarin, the character "Hung" symbolizes soaring into the sky.

Hsing Legend Theatre

Hsing Legend Theatre is a newly launched Peking opera troupe founded by a group of young opera lovers from the well-established Contemporary Legend Theatre.

Resident Island Dance Theatre

Taiwan's Resident Island Dance Theatre (RIDT) troupe was established in 2010 by choreographer Chang Chung-an. Through powerful and dynamic body movements and experimenting with different dance styles, Chang and RIDT give form and expression to social issues.

With the French government having called a halt to all large-scale gatherings ahead of July, those selected to perform will continue to be qualified to represent Taiwan in 2021. For those who have already paid travel- and show-related expenses, with the submission of appropriate documentation and receipts, the Ministry will make use of administrative measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and account for those expenses to help relieve the resulting burden on these performers.
