Taiwanese artist Chou Ming-yi (周明毅) will be presenting 31 works revolving around the theme "Eco y Yo (Echo and I)" at the fifth HYBRID Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid, Spain, from May 28 through May 30.

Chou Ming-yi pointed out that "echo" can serve as praise and response to nature, things, history, events or the self. "Since the outbreak of the pandemic, when night fell upon us, the feeling of solitude, fear, and awe was aroused in me; when daybreak came, the light marked a new beginning, signifying openness, sacredness, and brilliance, and a sense of progression," Chou elaborated.

Chou used the combination of white and gold colors in quite a few of his works. "In the imaginations of many, those colors contain the ideals of beauty, truth, and goodness, as well as achieving perfection, and all aspiration originates from this very moment," he said.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain indicated that the epidemic cannot separate people from art, and people are even more in need of consolation from art in times of anxiety.

This is the third time Taiwan has participated in HYBRID, and Taiwan will not be absent from Madrid’s important art event that boosts the visibility of Taiwan’s visual art in Spain even during the time of a pandemic, it added.

Chou is adept at using colors and lines as elements in bringing about different interpretations and imaginations of time and space, and has created his uniquely abstract and geometric styles.

Chou’s 31 works are mainly three-dimensional and two-dimensional creations. On the two-dimensional works, different materials such as silk-screen printing, acrylic paint, oil painting, oily markers, and watercolors are used to display outstanding techniques, while the three-dimensional works are mainly made of ceramics. The color contrast and use of forms and materials are imbued with philosophical meaning.

Chou obtained a Ph.D. in 2008 from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Seville in Spain. He specializes in printmaking, and some of his printmaking works are in collection of National Library of Spain, while his "Time Series 100 (時間系列100)" is in the collection of Art Bank Taiwan. He is active in the art scene of both countries.

HYBRID Contemporary Art Fair is an emerging contemporary art fair in Spain. This year, despite COVID-19, more than 70 artists from Taiwan, Spain, Germany, Austria, Israel and other countries attended the fair.
