Taiwanese artist Su Hui-yu (蘇匯宇) will hold his first solo exhibition titled "The Cinema of Séance" at 1646 Experimental Art Space in The Hague, Netherlands, from June 9 through June 27.
On view are three of Su's works, "Super Taboo (超級禁忌)," a film adaptation of a pornographic publication of the same title. In "The Glamorous Boys of Tang(唐朝綺麗男)," Su presents a re-creation of a 1985 film written by renowned poet and screenwriter Chui Kang-chien (邱剛健). His newest work "The Women’s Revenge (女性的復仇)," a five-channel video installation, was inspired by his childhood memories.
Through the multiple perspectives in Su's work, his works center around Taiwanese history, memory and re-imagination. He examines the relationship between history and memory, engages the taboos and cultural values of the past and present. He also explores and reinterpret the mechanism of oppression and liberation that are tied to the country’s cultural values.
Before martial law was lifted in Taiwan in the 1970s, some films based on the theme "community realism (社為寫實)" began to spread in Taiwan. Although the initial intention of these films was to explore and reflect real society, the marketing orientation and ideology became a form of exploitation. These productions also signalled the beginning of an immensely transformative period in the country.
Born in Taipei in 1976, Su obtained an MFA from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2003, and has remained active in the contemporary art scene ever since. Su has been featured in renowned international film festivals, exhibitions and art institutes. His work "The Women’s Revenge" is nominated for the Ammodo Tiger Short Awards, making it the third time that he has been nominated for the competition.
