Madrid's international film festival hosts first lecture on Taiwanese films

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Spain is collaborating with FILMADRID, Madrid's international film festival, to organize a lecture on Taiwanese films titled “Curso de cine taiwanés,” which will be held at The Burning House (La Casa Encendida) in Spain from Dec. 13 to 16 for the first time.

During the event, four Taiwanese films including "One Day (有一天)," "Dangerous Youth (危險的青春)," "Murmur of the Hearts (念念),” and "God Man Dog (流浪神狗人)” will be screened. Supported by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, the screenings will be presented along with a series of activities to allow Spanish audiences to learn more about different aspects of contemporary Taiwanese cinema.

The Cultural Division of the TECO in Spain and the FILMADRID worked together for the first time last year and played "Ohong Village (蚵豐村)" by Taiwanese director Lim Lung-yin (林龍吟), which was well-received. This year, the event is divided into four themes. Along with film screenings, FILMADRID director Nuria Cubas, renowned film critic Javier H. Estrada, and professor of film studies Gabriel Doménech González, will jointly introduce the characteristics of Taiwanese movies.

Through the film "One Day," the first session of the lecture focuses on analyzing the stages and beautiful moments of a romantic relationship. The second session explores the stories of passion and longing created by Taiwanese filmmakers from different generations. The third session will highlight Taiwanese female directors such as Sylvia Chang (張艾嘉) and Zero Chou (周美玲). The last session focuses on the most frequently discussed issues in Taiwanese movies-identifying with our cultural origins and returning back to the place of birth.
