Long Night of Science in Berlin to feature Taipei culture

A visualization of the Culture Lab, a Taipei-based platform for youths to explore art and science, will be staged at the Long Night of Science in Berlin from June 24 through 27.

The Culture Lab is a Ministry of Culture initiative that provides young entrepreneurs with low-threshold accessto resources for product development and venues for exhibitions and performances. The core concept of the initiative is "enhancing culture to boost the culture-driven economy.”

It aims to create a full-fledged ecosystem for the cultural and creative industry by recruiting industry leaders and academic institutes to guide youths through the process of creating, producing, presenting, and marketing their products. The initiative also provides guidance on operations and team organization, and offers rental equipment and facilities.

Curated by Professor Deng Ying-chih (鄧英志) of the Technical University of Berlin, "Conscious City Lab Berlin-Taipei” will present the proposal of allowing members of the general public to participate in the government's planning of urban design and usage of community venues.

By making information pertaining to such resources, public facilities, and related groups transparent, Deng's project will allow local residents to participate and discuss during the decision-making process of urban design, and to offer feedback to the city of their residence.

The visualization will combine the cultural industry and technology to offer insights into the policies and spirit of the Culture Lab. It will also present how the initiative incorporates Taiwan's creative and cultural industry with sustainable space and urban management.

Moreover, it will combine digital media with visual art to showcase Taiwan's unique cultural scene. To make it easier for audiences to understand, simple technical symbols will also be used to represent and describe the different elements that constitute a city.

Additional events including exhibitions, professional guides, and forums will also be offered to help the audiences connect with the Lab's core values.

"Long Night of Science” is an annual Berlin-based event launched in 2000. Each year, it brings together more than 50 research institutes to present their latest research. Today, it has become the largest platform in Berlin for promoting education.

The Berlin-Taipei project is expected to present the culture scene of Taiwan's future urban cities and kick start dialogue on urban planning between Taipei and Berlin.
