Taiwanese artists to join escape-themed exhibition in Vienna

"Are there topoi inherent in the theme "escape” which can exist independently of its causes?” - Curatorial theme

"Elsewhere is Nowhere,” an international joint exhibition curated by Taiwanese and German artists, will be on view at Vienna's Kunsthalle Exnergasse (KEX) from Jan. 19 through March 4.

Curated by Fu Ya-wen (傅雅雯) and Sven Bergelt, the exhibition will explore the theme "escape” based on the humanitarian values embodied by Europe, Africa, and Asia and how the international community is responding to the current situation of these three continents.

The idea of escape is derived from the global refugee crisis mounting in the 21st century. Here, refugees are defined as those who are forced to leave their country to escape from war, national disaster, or oppressive poverty.

The seven featured artists are: Fu (Taiwan), Bergelt (Germany), Nicolas Rupcich (Chile), Sebastian Stumpf (Germany), Christina Werner (Austria), Tsui Kuang-yu (崔廣宇, Taiwan), and Aluan Wang (王新仁, Taiwan). They will present their respective notions of "escape” through digital art, installations, photographs, and performances.

The artworks will focus on trans-cultural concepts of freedom, restraint, fear, uncertainty, hope, shelter, and family. Issues that arise from "escaping” will be explored from different perspectives to create dialogues that cross cultures and borders.

The artists will also question whether "escape” is an independent concept by looking into the conventional methods of "escape” and rethinking the connotations of such assumptions.

With the support of Geothe Institute Taipei, "Elsewhere is Nowhere” was exhibited at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in central Taiwan last year.
