Taiwanese dancers to hold performances, workshops in Linz

Taiwan's Century Contemporary Dance Company (世紀當代舞團) will bring two beautifully choreographed dance performances to the Austrian city of Linz on Sept. 30.

Hosted by Posthof Linz, the two-day event comprises one ticketed performance of two dance pieces on Sept. 30, and two workshops on the following day. The first workshop is designed for professional dancers while the second will feature an artist talk by CCDC Artistic Director Yao Shu-fen (姚淑芬) on contemporary dance in Taiwan.

Century Contemporary Dance Company is a 15-year-old dance troupe that works with artists from different disciplines. CCDC has previously worked with established groups such as the Leipzig Ballet to create choreography that has been compared to magical realism.

The first dance piece was inspired by Wim Wender's film "Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin)” and set to the original score. The eponymous production offers a magical feast presenting human memories of the angels by combining the bodies of the dancers with realistic and fictitious image projection.

The second dance piece "Wild Butterflies (狂放的野蝴蝶)” is a wild fusion of classic, hip hop, martial arts, ballet, and modern dance. The butterflies serve as a metaphor for a typical day in Taiwan, and allude to the constant metamorphosis of urban life as people bustle from sunrise to sunset.

The two-piece showcase in itself is the culmination of extensive cultural exchanges and transnational collaboration.

"Wings of Desire” features input from German opera director Thilo Reinhardt, theater lines from Austrian writer Peter Handke, and music from Australia's Nick Cave and Crime & the City Solution. "Wild Butterflies” was choreographed by Mario Schroder, artistic director of Leipzig Ballet.
