Taiwanese culture will be presented through two programs at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August - "Taiwan Season” comprising Tjimur Dance Theatre (蒂摩爾古薪舞集), Puppet Beings Theatre (偶偶偶劇團), and Formosa Circus Art (FOCA, 福爾摩沙馬戲團) - and "Island Voices” represented by TAI Body Theatre (TAI身體劇場).
Tjimur Dance Theatre, a modern dance company with aboriginal Paiwan roots, returns to Edinburgh this year with a new production titled "Gaze of the Kavaluan.” Choreographed by Baru Madilin, "Kavaluan” is the Paiwan word for the lily flower and the chafed symbolism of chastity in this satirical exploration of self, art, and sexuality.
Puppet Beings Theatre, a children's theater known for its heartwarming and outstandingly original performances, will enthrall Edinburgh viewers with the incredible storytelling power of ordinary paper in "The Paper Play.”
Formosa Circus Art (FOCA), a versatile dance company that mixes circus acts with theatrics, will present extraordinary physical feats and seamless group coordination in the "Self and Others.”
Hailing from Taiwan's indigenous Truku community, Tai Body Theater seeks to re-establish a lost connection among body, heart, and soul. "The Sigh of Body” embodies the experimental spirit of indigenous dance and seeks to reflect the fragmentation of contemporary society.
All four performance groups will offer ticketed shows from Aug. 7 through 30 in Scotland's capital city.
