French film festival to showcase Taiwan’s VR, technical prowess

New media professionals and filmmakers from Taiwan will be attending a series of screenings, workshops, and forums from June 19 through 23 at France's largest platform for virtual reality the NewImages Festival in Paris.

Out of the eight Taiwan films selected, four are vying for accolades in the festival's official VR Competition: "Abandoned Temple (恐怖廟宇)" by Cheng Wei-hao (程偉豪); "Mr. Buddha (董仔的人)" by Lee Chung (李中); "Pneumo Hacker (肺臟機動隊)" by Lai Kuan-yuan (賴冠源); and "Mechanical Souls: Training Session (喜宴機器人)" by Gaëlle Mourre.

The four other films rounding up the "Focus on Taiwan" selection are "Afterimage for Tomorrow (留給未來的殘影)" by Singing Chen (陳芯宜); "Love Stream of YUKI <3 (主播愛你唷)" by Tsai Tsung-han (蔡宗翰); "The Missing Body (失身記)" by Huang Hsin-chien (留給未來的殘影); and "Way to Heaven (帶你上天堂)" by Yang Ya-che (楊雅喆).

Featured directors Chen, Tsai, Huang, and John Hsu (徐漢強) will also attend the NewImages Industry Days forum in Paris on June 21 and 22, along with project manager Lee Huai-chin (李懷瑾) and international coordinator Yao Sin-yin (姚信伊) of the Kaohsiung Film Festival and Kaohsiung VR Film Lab.

NewImages Festival Director Michael Swierczynski, who served on the jury panel for last year's Kaohsiung Film Festival, applauded Taiwan's recent efforts in virtual and audiovisual advancements. He noted that future collaborations between Taiwan and France should take into account each nation's respective strengths, and such pooling of creativity and funding can pave the way for art in an increasingly technological world.
